BDX Droids

BDX Droids

Last updated:

BDX droids are small, two-legged character robots built by Disney Imagineering and Disney Research for Star Wars. They look like scrappy droids from a galaxy far away, with a box-shaped body, a head with camera-like lenses and bouncy, expressive walks, and they were trained with reinforcement learning in simulation so they can balance and move with personality on real park ground. Disney first playtested them with guests at Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge at Disneyland in October 2023, gave them limited daily appearances in 2024, and in 2025 announced appearances at Tokyo Disneyland, Disneyland Paris and Walt Disney World. A 2025 Disney Research paper described a diffusion-based system that learns from operator-driven interactions so the droids can show moods such as happy, sad, angry and shy on their own. BDX droids are park characters, not products, and are not for sale.

Frequently Asked Questions

Get answers to common questions about this robot

Q1. What is BDX Droids, and what problem is it designed to solve?

BDX droids are small, two-legged Star Wars character robots built by Disney Imagineering and Disney Research. They bring droid characters to life as walking, expressive park performers.

Q2. What are the main capabilities and key features of BDX Droids?

They walk with personality, stay balanced on uneven park ground, react to guests, and can show moods such as happy, sad, angry and shy, using behaviors learned with reinforcement learning.

Q3. Who is BDX Droids built for, and which industries can benefit from it?

They are built for Disney theme parks, where they entertain guests, and for Disney Research as a platform for character robotics.

Q4. Is BDX Droids a commercial product or still a research prototype?

They are park characters in service, not consumer products, and Disney also uses them as research platforms.

Q5. Is BDX Droids currently available for purchase, and when is it expected to ship?

No. BDX droids are not for sale. They appear only as Disney park characters.

Q6. How does BDX Droids actually work in real-world environments?

Disney trains their walking in simulation with random pushes so they stay balanced, and trains interaction from recorded operator-driven encounters; operators can steer them and send mood commands.

Q7. When was BDX Droids announced or officially launched?

Disney first playtested the droids with guests at Disneyland in October 2023, expanded appearances in 2024, and described its interaction research in April 2025.

Q8. How is BDX Droids different from other robots in the same category?

Unlike general-purpose or humanoid robots, BDX droids are designed as entertainment characters, with the look, movement and moods of Star Wars droids rather than work tasks.

Q9. Does BDX Droids require additional development or customization after purchase?

Not applicable for guests: they are operated and maintained by Disney.

Q10. What is the future roadmap or planned upgrades for BDX Droids?

Disney said in 2025 that droid appearances were planned for Tokyo Disneyland, Disneyland Paris and Walt Disney World; no consumer release is planned.
