ANYmal C is the 2019 industrial generation of the ANYmal quadruped from ANYbotics, the ETH Zurich spin-off. It was redesigned from the research-grade ANYmal B for ruggedness and reliability, with a streamlined sealed body, new drives, more computing power and depth cameras on all sides. It walks and climbs stairs on its own, maps its surroundings with a 3D LiDAR, and carries a pan-tilt inspection unit with zoom, thermal and gas sensors to read gauges, spot hot equipment and detect leaks. A docking station lets it recharge by itself. It has since been succeeded by ANYmal D.

ANYmal X

ANYmal X

By: ANYbotics

Launched: 2022

ANYmal X is the world's first Ex-proof legged inspection robot, certified for safe operation in hazardous and potentially explosive environments up to Zone 1, including ATEX/IECEx certification. Designed by ANYbotics for industrial applications like oil & gas and chemical industries, it automates routine inspections to enhance safety and operational efficiency by reducing human exposure to dangerous areas. Key capabilities include exceptional mobility with AI-based navigation for climbing steep stairs, traversing narrow spaces (600mm), slippery, rocky, wet surfaces, and slopes up to ±30°. It features super-human senses with 360° LiDAR for mapping and obstacle avoidance up to 100m, depth cameras for near-field detection within 2m, pan-tilt inspection payload with 20x zoom camera, thermal camera (-10° to +400°C), spotlight, microphone, and optional gas sensors for detecting combustible and toxic gases. The rugged, impact-protected design is IP67 dust- and waterproof, supports autonomous operation with docking stations for recharging, and includes safety features like emergency stop, FCC/CE compliance, and safety handles. ANYmal X self-navigates facilities, remembers tasks, and performs precise inspections in complex, dynamic terrains, enabling fully autonomous missions in all weather conditions.

ANYmal

By: ANYbotics

Launched: 2016

ANYmal is a versatile quadruped robot developed by ANYbotics for autonomous inspection and monitoring in challenging industrial environments. Its legged design and AI-based mobility software enable unprecedented performance, including dynamic running, safe climbing over obstacles and stairs, and navigation through narrow corridors, rough terrain, rocky surfaces, slippery areas, and wet conditions. Equipped with advanced sensors like LiDAR for long-range mapping up to 100m, depth cameras for near-field obstacle detection within 2m, stereo cameras, IMU, microphones, thermal cameras, and optional gas sensors, ANYmal performs visual, thermal, acoustic, and gas measurements. It supports fully autonomous operation with SLAM for mapping and path planning, even offline, and can recharge via docking stations. Ruggedized with IP67 protection, it carries up to 10kg payload, making it ideal for energy, construction, and data centers where it conducts scheduled missions, detects anomalies like hotspots or vibrations, and enhances safety by reducing human exposure to hazards.

Frequently Asked Questions

Get answers to common questions about this robot

Q1. What is the robot dog ANYmal C, and what problem does it solve?

ANYmal C is an industrial four-legged inspection robot from ANYbotics. It automates routine rounds in plants and offshore sites, so people spend less time in hot, noisy or hazardous areas.

Q2. What are the main capabilities and key features of ANYmal C?

It walks and climbs stairs autonomously, maps its surroundings with LiDAR and cameras, avoids obstacles and docks itself to recharge. With its inspection unit it reads gauges, checks heat and detects gas leaks and unusual sounds.

Q3. Who is ANYmal C built for, and which industries benefit from it?

It is built for energy, oil and gas, utilities and heavy-industry operators, plus research groups that want a robust legged platform.

Q4. Is ANYmal C a commercial product or a research prototype?

It was a commercial product aimed at industrial customers. ANYbotics has since replaced it with the newer ANYmal D, so the C is best seen as the earlier production generation.

Q5. Is ANYmal C currently available for purchase?

New ANYbotics sales now focus on the newer ANYmal generation. Customers interested in the C-generation hardware should check with ANYbotics or its research partners.

Q6. How does ANYmal C perform in real-world environments and rough terrain?

It is sealed against dust and water and was tested on offshore platforms and industrial sites, where it handles stairs, gratings, narrow gaps and weather.

Q7. When was ANYmal C announced or officially launched?

ANYbotics announced it in August 2019 as a completely new platform replacing the research-focused ANYmal B.

Q8. How does ANYmal C compare to other quadruped robot dogs?

Compared with many research quadrupeds, ANYmal C was one of the first built for industrial reliability, with sealing, autonomy, docking and inspection sensors included from the start.

Q9. Can ANYmal C be customized with add-ons or third-party tools?

Yes. It accepts custom payloads and runs a flexible software stack, and a spare processor module is reserved for customer applications.

Q10. What is the future roadmap or planned upgrades for ANYmal C?

The ANYmal line has continued with the newer ANYmal D and the explosion-protected ANYmal X, which build on the ideas first brought together in the C.
